Major Tom

what happens when you think that you're in the same place and you realize that you're not even remotely on the same planet?

well in some cases you either attempt to make a journey to meet someplace near, in the middle, in the same galaxy or even just attempt to make radio contact, but sometimes that distance is just to far or the journey is just to hard to even try.

it's like there are two different flight manuals out there, one for this spaceship and another for your spaceship.  both of them have the same instructions, both of them have the same destination but they both have different settings and expectations from the propulsion system.

so how do you move forward, do you forget about all of the engine problems you had in the spaceship and trust that it will propel you to your destination, do you continue to work on the engine and attempt to make sure all of the maintenance needs are met or do you eventually just realize that in order to save the crew you just need to hit the escape pod button and go back to mission control?

this is what i do know, reaching a final destination is hard, the parts are going to break sometimes, there is going to be unexpected failures in the flight system at times, sometimes there are items that you can't repair no matter how hard you try, parts that made the spaceship run the way it did when you first took off, it's not that those items mean the spaceship can't fly but it made the spaceship what it was and you miss that part often.  do you scrub the mission because of the part being gone or do you figure out a way to continue the mission knowing that it's going to be harder, but ultimately you will reach the destination?

i guess it's easier to scrub the mission, go back to home base, hope for a soft landing, check out the equipment and build another spaceship at times.  but will it have the same engine, the same interior comforts that the old one did, will all of the buttons and switches be in the same place or will you have to forget everything you knew and learned about that spaceship and start from scratch?
