Social Media, where has it taken us?

Are they really what we need in this world?
I sometimes wonder if we've taken a step backwards in this place we call life. Do we share too much, do we share enough, do we share everything in hopes that we receive some recognition.
Or do we share so others that we are friends with, that we know, that we barely know, that we don't have a clue who they are other than someone that "liked us", "friended us" or just happen to see our post and we decided to let them into our world will "like" something we posted?
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go completely silent for a day, a week or a month? What would happen, would our "friends" ask us if we were alright, would they start posting on their social media outlets "I wonder what happened to, or has anyone heard from, I fear the worst because _________ hasn't posted what they had for dinner or what movie they watched, or hasn't liked something I posted.
I remember when I was a cop I would get the call to "check on the welfare" when a son, daughter, mother or father couldn't reach someone on the phone, I'd go to the address, knock on the door and if the person was there I'd tell them that blah blah was trying to reach them, if they were not at home we'd just leave a note on the door to contact the dispatcher. Who do we contact if someone stops posting all of a sudden? Is there a Social Media police?
I admit it, I'm guilty. I post where I am, what I'm eating, what I'm having to drink, who I'm with, more pictures that any one person should ever take and I do it over every known outlet of social media.
Do you really care that I'm at my office, what bar I'm at, where I'm having lunch, what I'm having for dinner or breakfast, or who I'm with? Do I post too much or do I post too little? Maybe you'd like to know what time I go to bed, or wake up in the morning, or how many cups of coffee I drink and what time I drink them.
Have you ever wondered what would happen if no one "liked" or "commented" on something you posted, would you stop, would you make it more interesting or just say "to hell with it, they have no clue how interesting this is".
Now, I'm not professing that I'm going to stop, but maybe I'll slow down and conduct my own experiment,
What happened to the days of just picking up the phone and talking?
